Insane Daily Training Routine Of Masahiko Kimura

Masahiko Kimura is recognized as one of the most exceptional judo masters ever. He weighed 85 kg and 187 lb with a height of 5 ft 7 inches 170cm. This judo icon was born on September 10, 1917, in Kumamoto, Japan. 

In the world of submission grappling, the reverse ude-garami arm lock, often called “Kimura,” is famous. This Kimura lock was named after his renowned victory over Hélio Gracie, the pioneer of Gracie jiu jitsu.

Masahiko Judo Training Beginning 

Masahiko Kimura initiated his Judo training when he was just nine years old. He achieved the rank of yondan (4th dan) at 15 after six years of rigorous Judo practice. He succeeded over six opponents in succession, all of whom were 3rd and 4th dan. In 1935, at the tender age of 18, he set a record by becoming the youngest ever godan (5th degree black belt). He accomplished this feat by defeating eight opponents in a row at Kodokan, the central administrative body of Judo.

Kimura’s Exceptional Achievements

Kimura’s extraordinary achievements can largely be credited to his rigorous training routine, supervised by his mentor, Tatsukuma Ushijima. It is said that Kimura was defeated in only four judo matches throughout his life, all of which took place in 1935. He contemplated giving up Judo after these defeats but was persuaded to continue training by his friends. He practiced the osoto gari (large outer reap) leg throw against a tree on a regular basis. His daily randori or practice fights at the Tokyo Police and Kodokan dojos led many of his opponents to experience concussions and lose consciousness. Numerous opponents requested Kimura to refrain from using his osoto gari.

Masahiko Kimura Strict Workout Regime

During the peak of his profession, Kimura’s regimen included a thousand push-ups and nine hours of daily practice. He was promoted to the 7th dan at the age of 30. It is a rank that was put on hold due to disagreements with Kodokan about his transition to professional wrestling. Also, his refusal to give back the All Japan Judo Championship flag and issuing dan ranks while in Brazil postponed his rank.

Mas Oyama personally stated that the ONLY individual who matched his level of training, or indeed, surpassed it, was none other than Masahiko Kimura.

  • Judo Practice- 100 Throws
  • 200 Partner’s Back or Decline Sit-ups
  • 200 Squats using Partner/Log/Barbell/Sandbag (150-200lbs)
  • Judo Training- 100 Submission Drills
  • Throwing Practice (especially Uchi-mata) Against a Tree- 1 Hour
  • 500 Shuto (Knife-hand Blows)
  • Judo Training- 100 Initiation Drills
  • Judo Sparring- “X” x 3 Minute Sessions
  • Bunny Hop- 1 km
  • One-Arm Barbell Lift and Press- 15 Reps each side OR Bench Press- 3 Sets: 3, 2, and 1 Reps
  • Headstand- 3 x 3 Minutes (against a wall)
  • Extra Judo Training- 1 Hour
